This was the American Victorian Era, a time when there were a few very wealthy people and a developing middle class. The Victorians would be loathe to associate or share openly anything with lesser class members. So that would rule out A. and C. The Victorians did distance themselves from lesser classes, but almost by definition, Victorians were highly refined and behaved in patrician ways. That would rule out D, So, I would pick B.
